Vietnam Is absolutely one of our favourite countries. We visited Vietnam as part of a long trip to South East Asia. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City having been to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore.
We were fascinated by the diversity after this very attractive country; it’s people – over 50 ethnic groups; it’s religions – too numerous to mention; it’s art – the Vietnamese are great artists; it’s food, the combination of French and fresh Oriental flavours make for a wonderful cuisine – probably the best in the world.
We began in Ho Chi Minh city and travelled northwards eventually ending up in Hanoi, having had many wonderful experiences along the way. It is very difficult to do justice to this wonderfully diverse country and it’s friendly and determined people, so I will just give a flavour. This was some time ago so it may have changed somewhat in the meantime.
Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta
Arrived at Mekong Delta and its vibrant city having experienced Mekong all the way from Northern Thailand. We were very impressed by the friendliness and energy. A country steeped in culture – 50 ethnic groups – and history – some great, some not so good.
We had a long stay with this multi-generation family on the Delta – terrific experience. Got a lot of insight into their way of life – simple but considered! We could all learn a lot.
Food and Cuisine
The natural food involves vegetables, rice and quality spices. 100 years of French rule (ending 1959) brought their touches, resulting in the best cuisine in the world.
Below, some simpler items
People and Religions
Vietnam population 90m+, has over 50 ethnic backgrounds from Khymer (a la Cambodia) in South to Ethnic Vietnamese – the majority. It’s culture stems from ancient times. As you travel north you can notice the differences. Four great philosophies exist – Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism and Christianity. Most are Buddhist -both Mahayana and Therevada (mainly in south). Curious Religions are Ancestor Worship and Caodism. This latter is a mixture of all, founded 1878, its colourful temple is at Tay Ninh (below). These religions all influence the culture – in a positive way.
Art – a very artistic people – this is evident everywhere, including in paintings which show oriental and western leanings – the French.
Recent History
Of course, in Vietnam recent history can’t be avoided. Although, I didn’t once hear any negativity (well maybe some towards previous colonial power!)
At Chu Chi (-in SW) there is very visible evidence of how a determined, resilient people could overcome against the odds. The personal deprivation and sacrifice was very impressive.
Tunnels (phew!)
It is well known the role tunnels played. Such tunnels exist at Chu Chi. Being highly claustrophobic I was eventually persuaded to venture through. It was only 50m and I emerged triumphant. Later in the trip we got to Hue which was on the DMZ, it was much bombed and whole villages went underground. I was persuaded once again. The tunnels were of a size! I am 6ft. Sometime crawling was needed. I emerged 2 km later a basket case. Always do your research!!!!
Hoi An – this is a remarkable town of culture – Japanese bridge shows some history. It is really noted for its silk. Vietnamese silk best in world and Hoi An is its centre.
Hue – with Danang a main town of Central Viernam – on the Perfume River and is the dividing line between the previous 2 – north and South. A citadel city, it was a main cultural, religious and education centre – this is very visible.
Hill Tribes and Rice Paddies – North Vietnam
A wonderful experience – living in homestays with hill tribes. To experience this wonderful people, contentedly living their arduous existence was definetely a highlight, although sleeping on thin mats on hard floors is an acquired taste.
Rice Threshing – BTW Vietnam is the second largest producer of rice.
Halong Bay
Famous (including from James Bond) – 3000+ limestone islands with unique shapes in emerald waters – some sight!
Many People live in their floating villages
Also famous for its colourful “grotto” caves.
Hanoi
Capital of The North – very different to South – highly industrious, cultural, big, busy city. A seriously interesting place. People more reserved. Great Museums and Art Gallery.
