We spent a month in Croatia – in 3 locations south to north. Following is a few notes to give a feel. A smashing place – real friendly folks – great scenery. As I have mentioned, when you are standing making a show of yourself painting, we always attract folks to chat . You end up chatting about all sorts of stuff – so it was here. We felt very welcome. It is a long country from southern Dalmatia to Northern Italy – people and e.g. architecture reflect this.
Dubrovnik
First port of call. Very impressive city; marble everywhere, small city, great city wall which you can walk all around the city. Great place to wander around – streets, churches, museums, and very nice outdoor cafes, etc. Outside there are nice beaches, harbour and trips to the many islands or to e.g Montenegro.
Trogir – Central Dalmatia
We chose this as a smaller, centrally located destination and weren’t disappointed. Really nice harbour, squares, museum, cathedral, cafes, etc.
Zagreb – the Capital
Visit only – Medieval upper town, modern lower.Cathedral, Museums,Park, and a real café culture. Nice friendly city with very pleasant atmosphere – good place to ramble.
Split – the second city
Just visited. Main is Palace of Diocletian – AD 295. Streets, Churches, Shops, Cafes, etc. Trips to Islands.
Opatija – Riviera – Northern Croatia
Our third destination. Very Italian in its architecture. Really nice, friendly, relaxing place – lots of accommodation, cafes and beaches – quite upmarket in appearance.
